Amaju Pinnick Loses FIFA Council Re-Election by One Vote

Former Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) President, Amaju Pinnick, has failed in his bid for re-election into the FIFA Council, missing out by just one vote at the Confederation of African Football (CAF) General Assembly in Cairo on March 12.

In a tightly contested race, Djibouti’s Souleiman Waberi secured the last available seat with 29 votes, narrowly edging out Pinnick, who garnered 28 votes.

Morocco’s Fouzi Lekjaa topped the election with 49 votes, while Egypt’s Hani Rida and Niger’s Djibrilla Hamidou each secured 35 votes. Mauritania’s Ahmed Yahya and Waberi also clinched their positions with 29 votes each.

The result marks a setback for Pinnick, who had been a FIFA Council member since 2021 and was seeking another term on the world football governing body’s decision-making committee.

In the women’s category, Kanizat Ibrahim from Comoros emerged victorious with 30 votes, defeating Lydia Nsekera (13 votes) and Isha Johansen (7 votes).
