Beatrice Ekweremadu Returns to Nigeria After UK Release

Beatrice Ekweremadu, wife of former Deputy Senate President Senator Ike Ekweremadu, has returned to Nigeria, according to Vanguard.

Senator Ekweremadu, his wife, and their associate, Dr. Obinna Obeta, were convicted and sentenced by a UK court in May 2023 on charges of organ trafficking. Beatrice arrived in Abuja on January 22.

The conviction stemmed from a March 23 ruling where the court found the trio guilty of trafficking a 21-year-old Nigerian trader to the UK for kidney harvesting, a violation of the UK’s Modern Slavery Act 2015.

This landmark case marked the first conviction under the Modern Slavery Act for organ trafficking.

Senator Ekweremadu was sentenced to 10 years, Beatrice to 6 years despite her health concerns, and Dr. Obinna Obeta also received a 10-year sentence for his involvement.
