Confusion trails Kaiama abduction numbers

Conflicting reports have emerged from the Kwara State Government and the Al-Sunnah terrorist group over the number of people abducted during the February 3, 2026, attack on Woro and Nukku communities in Kaiama Local Government Area.

According to the Kwara State Government, between 20 and 30 residents were kidnapped in Woro during the assault, while several others were reportedly killed. In contrast, the Al-Sunnah claimed responsibility for the attack, alleging that it abducted no fewer than 176 persons who are still being held captive.

A video that went viral across the state on Saturday showed the group parading several abducted individuals. In the footage, the militants claimed that most of the captives were women and children taken from Kaiama Local Government Area.

Reacting to the development, the Kwara State Commissioner for Communication, Bolanle Olukoju, expressed deep concern over the safety of the victims.

She stated that the government was disturbed by the video allegedly showing some of those taken during the February 3 attack on Woro, adding that the thoughts of the state government remain with the affected families. She reaffirmed the administration’s commitment to ensuring the safe return of all abducted persons.

Olukoju further acknowledged the anxiety the footage may have caused residents, noting that security agencies and relevant authorities are carefully reviewing the video to verify the identities of those displayed.

She explained that due to conflicting accounts surrounding the incident in Woro and Nukku, the state government and security agencies have refrained from announcing an official figure for the number of abductees.
