CPPE Raises Concern Over Proposal To Ban Imported Solar Panels

Centre for the Promotion of Private Enterprise (CPPE) has expressed concern over the government’s plan to ban the importation of solar panels as a measure to promote domestic production.
Strongly advising against this policy proposition, the Chief Executive Officer of CPPE, Dr Muda Yusuf, said Nigeria has one of the worst energy accesses in the world with a per capital electricity consumption of about 160 kiloWatt per hour, far below the Sub-Saharan average of 350 kiloWatt per hour.
The Federal Government recently announced plans to halt the importation of solar panels to promote local manufacturing and advance the country’s shift towards clean energy, a proposition industry analysts kicked against.
The CPPE boss noted that it is a complete negation of the government policy to deepen and promote the adoption of renewable energy solutions by households, small businesses, rural communities, government institutions and other organisations.
He added that the adoption of solar solutions has gained an impressive momentum in the last two years, especially in the light of the soaring energy cost in the economy.
