The House of Representatives has mandated the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) to instruct all internet service providers in the country to immediately block websites hosting obscene and pornographic content.
The decision was reached following a motion sponsored by Dalhatu Tafoki, a lawmaker from Katsina State under the All Progressives Congress (APC). Tafoki argued that cyber pornography has become a global challenge and that Nigeria, as a religious nation, has not done enough to curb its spread. He noted that several countries in Asia, Africa, and the Middle East have already enacted laws prohibiting access to such content.
The lawmaker also cited warnings from psychologists and sociologists, highlighting the detrimental effects of pornography, including its links to adultery, prostitution, and addiction.
“Experts worldwide have cautioned against the psychological and social consequences of consuming pornographic material,” Tafoki emphasized.
Following a voice vote, Speaker Tajudeen Abbas confirmed the resolution, with lawmakers unanimously supporting the motion. The House further instructed the NCC to enforce penalties on internet service providers that fail to comply with the directive.
