Afropop artist Akinmayokun Awodumila, better known as May D, has opened up about his fallout with Square Records, formerly owned by Peter and Paul Okoye of P-Square.
May D joined the label in 2011 but was dropped in August 2012, a move he says derailed his music career. Speaking on The Honest Bunch podcast on January 13, the “Ile Ijo” singer reflected on his time at the label, revealing struggles he faced, including living in poor conditions.
He recalled a visit from Davido during his early career: “When Davido was running from his dad, he came to my room at P-Square’s house and said, ‘May D, is this where you stay? I can’t sleep here.’ If I had a proper room, it would have been cooler.”
May D also shared that during his time with Square Records, he didn’t own a bank account, stating, “You only open an account when you have money.”
The 40-year-old singer claimed that at one point, he ranked above Wizkid and Davido in the Nigerian music scene. “It was Wizkid, Davido, and me. I was even bigger. What’s ‘Holla at Your Boy’ compared to ‘Soundtrack?’”
He concluded by describing his exit from the label as the turning point that disrupted his career trajectory.
