Nigerian economist and former presidential candidate, Kingsley Moghalu, has shared his perspective on the ongoing debates about British politician of Nigerian descent, Kemi Badenoch.
Badenoch, currently a UK Member of Parliament, has faced criticism for comments seemingly distancing herself from her Nigerian heritage. Her rise in British politics, coupled with her remarks, has sparked mixed reactions among Nigerians. While some celebrate her achievements, others question their relevance to Nigeria’s socio-political and economic challenges.
In a statement via X on Sunday, Moghalu dismissed the debate over Badenoch’s identity as inconsequential to Nigeria’s development. He remarked, “Even if she were to become the UK Prime Minister tomorrow morning, it would have absolutely ZERO implications (or benefits even) for Nigeria and Nigerians.”
Moghalu urged Nigerians to shift their focus to addressing the nation’s internal issues rather than dwelling on Badenoch’s identity. He said, “So why all the fuss? Nigerian leaders and Nigerians should fix Nigeria’s problems. ‘Claiming’ Kemi or her ‘denying’ Nigeria won’t solve them.”
Badenoch recently defended her controversial comments about Nigeria, which had drawn criticism from Nigeria’s Vice President, Kashim Shettima. She described her experience living in Nigeria as one marked by fear and corruption, sparking further discussions about her relationship with her heritage.
Moghalu’s stance underscores the need for Nigerians to prioritize solving domestic challenges over external debates.
