NUJ Chairman, Mallam Abdulateef Ahmed Finally Breaks Silence on Allegations of Government Support for His Second Tenure
The Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Mallam Abdulateef Ahmed, has finally responded to allegations suggesting that his second tenure bid was backed by the government. In an exclusive interview with UrbanPop Radio on Friday, March 14, Ahmed firmly denied the claims, stating that he was not financially or politically influenced by any external body.
Ahmed challenged anyone with proof of financial inducement to come forward, reinforcing his stance on transparency and integrity in his leadership.
“I challenge anyone to say they were financially induced. This is a baseless allegation. My tenure has been dedicated to upholding the ethics of journalism and the welfare of our members,” he asserted.
Years of Dedication to Journalism
During the interview, Ahmed shared insights into his extensive career, revealing that he has been in the journalism profession for nearly 16 years. Reflecting on his journey, he disclosed that before contesting for re-election, he sought advice from senior colleagues. According to him, many of them reassured him that his efforts over the years had already paved the way for his second tenure.
“Before the election, I consulted with some of my senior colleagues, and most of them told me: ‘Mallam Abdulateef Ahmed, you don’t need to bother yourself; you have worked for it.'”
Commitment to Journalists’ Welfare
Ahmed also used the opportunity to highlight his administration’s strides in improving journalists’ welfare. He emphasized the importance of addressing their concerns and ensuring that their needs are met.
“One of our key focuses has been the welfare of journalists. We have made significant progress in addressing their concerns, and we remain committed to doing more,” he stated.

In his closing remarks, Ahmed encouraged young journalists to uphold the core values of the profession. He advised them to always stand by the truth and ensure that their reports are factual and unbiased.
“To all young journalists out there, always stand by the truth. Journalism is about integrity, and it is our duty to report nothing but the truth,” he advised.
