President Bola Ahmed Tinubu recently held a discreet meeting with suspended Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, in London, in what sources say is a significant step towards resolving the prolonged political unrest in the state.
According to The Africa Report, the high-stakes meeting was requested by Governor Fubara himself, with the intention of mapping out a peaceful roadmap to restore stability in Rivers State.
This marks the first direct engagement between the two since President Tinubu declared a state of emergency in the state on March 18, suspending Fubara and appointing Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ekwe Ibas as interim administrator.
A senior aide to the President, who confirmed the meeting, emphasized that the dialogue was part of broader efforts to de-escalate tensions and return normalcy to the oil-rich state.
Interestingly, former Rivers governor and current FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike—once a key political ally of Fubara—was noticeably absent from the meeting. Reports suggest Wike is unsettled by peace talks progressing without his involvement.
Further discussions are reportedly planned, with President Tinubu expected to convene a meeting involving Fubara, Wike, and members of the Rivers State House of Assembly in the coming days to broker a lasting political solution.
The latest development follows a separate meeting between Wike and his loyal lawmakers in London, adding a fresh layer of intrigue to the unfolding political drama in Rivers State.
