The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has sealed off two Chinese-owned supermarkets in Jabi District and eight cosmetics outlets in Wuse Market, Abuja, for violating regulations on the sale and distribution of unregistered and improperly labeled products.
The enforcement exercise, carried out under the directive of NAFDAC Director-General, Prof. Mojisola Christianah Adeyeye, and led by Mr. Musa Embugushiki, resulted in the seizure of goods estimated at over ₦170 million.
The affected supermarkets, located on Mike Akhigbe Way and Ebitu Ukiwe Street, were closed after surveillance and consumer complaints revealed they were selling unregistered food items labeled exclusively in Chinese. This contravenes NAFDAC’s labeling policy, which mandates that all regulated products must carry English inscriptions to ensure safety and transparency for Nigerian consumers.
Although operators of the Ebitu Ukiwe supermarket denied the allegations, officials confirmed the store was fully operational and selling unregistered products at the time of the raid.
In addition, eight cosmetics shops at Wuse Market were sealed for stocking banned, expired, and unregistered cosmetic products, as well as aphrodisiacs and aesthetic medicines. Investigations further exposed individuals impersonating dermatologists and pharmacists who were promoting unsafe products for skin whitening, body enhancement, and other uses.
Among the seized items were Wenicks Capsules, Maxman Capsules, Boobs Enlargement Supplements, Curvy Weight Gain Products, Skin Whitening Vitamin Gummies, and several other unsafe goods.
