Gabon Coach Thierry Mouyouma Confident Ahead of World Cup Playoff Clash with Super Eagles

Gabon’s head coach, Thierry Mouyouma, has vowed that his side, the Panthers, will face the Super Eagles of Nigeria in their 2026 FIFA World Cup playoff clash with confidence and without fear.

While acknowledging Nigeria’s pedigree, Mouyouma admitted that the Super Eagles remain favourites heading into the semi-final encounter. He, however, noted that the pressure to win lies squarely on the three-time African champions.

“We know Nigeria is a great footballing nation and clearly the favourites, but we’re comfortable being the underdogs,” Mouyouma said. “Naturally, they will feel more pressure to deliver. We respect the Super Eagles for what they represent, but we don’t fear them.”

The Gabonese tactician further recognized the quality within the Nigerian squad. “We’re aware of the individual brilliance of players like Victor Osimhen and Ademola Lookman,” he added. “Nigeria knows our team too. To reach the World Cup, we must overcome the Super Eagles, then possibly DR Congo or Cameroon — it’s a tough road, but one that will help us grow as a team.”

Mouyouma concluded by highlighting the significance of the tie, saying, “These are the kind of high-stakes games we love to play — matches that carry real emotion and purpose, unlike friendlies.”

Gabon will lock horns with the Super Eagles on Thursday at the Prince Héritier Moulay El Hassan Sports Complex in Rabat.
