The Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) has denounced the violent scenes that erupted after Kano Pillars’ 1–1 draw with Shooting Stars Sports Club (3SC) on Sunday at the Sani Abacha Stadium in Kano.
Tension boiled over when Kano Pillars fans stormed the pitch, attacking match officials, players, and staff of Shooting Stars moments after a dramatic stoppage-time equaliser.
The hosts had taken an early lead through Mustapha Jibrin in the ninth minute and seemed destined for victory until Adams Mustapha struck late for 3SC — a goal that instantly turned celebration into chaos.
In a statement, NPFL Chief Operating Officer Davidson Owumi condemned the incident, describing it as unacceptable and pledging decisive action once official match reports are reviewed.
“We strongly condemn all forms of violence, intimidation, or misconduct towards players, officials, or fans,” Owumi said.
“This incident is being treated with the utmost seriousness, and appropriate sanctions will follow after a full review.”
He also assured that the league had reached out to match officials and 3SC representatives to confirm their safety.
Meanwhile, Kano Pillars FC acknowledged the unrest but maintained that security forces quickly restored order.
“A few misguided individuals attempted to disrupt peace after the final whistle, but our stewards and security personnel acted swiftly to control the situation,” the club said.
The club added that several offenders were arrested and handed over to police, pledging full cooperation with authorities.
“Anyone found guilty will face the law, and all identified troublemakers will be banned from the Sani Abacha Stadium for the next ten seasons,” the statement concluded.
