The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has revealed plans to subject 18 drivers, recently apprehended for driving against traffic (one-way), to mandatory psychiatric assessments.
According to a statement from Adebayo Taofiq, LASTMA’s Director of Public Affairs, the directive follows instructions from the Lagos State Government, describing it as part of a “strategic approach to address the growing problem of one-way traffic violations.”
Olalekan Bakare Oki, General Manager of LASTMA, emphasized that the psychiatric evaluations are not just procedural, but essential in protecting the public from individuals displaying “dangerously reckless” driving behaviour.
The agency also confirmed that legal proceedings have been initiated against the arrested motorists. The offenders are set to face immediate prosecution, with the psychiatric evaluations forming part of the broader legal process.
“In alignment with efforts to restore road discipline and public safety, the Lagos State Government has mandated that these 18 individuals undergo comprehensive psychiatric screening,” the statement read. “This move is intended as a corrective and rehabilitative strategy—not merely punitive.”
The evaluation will assess each driver’s mental fitness and behavioral tendencies, with the aim of deterring similar offences in the future.
Oki explained that the initiative aligns with international standards in traffic psychology and behavioural law enforcement. “Implementing psychiatric evaluations sends a strong message—it’s both a deterrent and a corrective measure,” he said. “This is about preserving lives, promoting responsible driving, and restoring sanity to our roads.”
Despite ongoing awareness campaigns, Oki lamented that some motorists continue to flout traffic laws, often leading to accidents, gridlock, and infrastructure damage.
He reiterated the state government’s commitment to enforcing traffic regulations rigorously to curb further incidents and ensure safer roads for all Lagosians.
